Painkillers

Painkillers are also known as analgesics that are prescribed to patients suffering from moderate to severe pain. When you are not able to manage the pain using other medications, you are prescribed painkillers with stronger effects. These painkillers are used to relieve the pain of the body which are of mainly four types such as non-opioids, compound treatments, opioids, and anti-inflammatory.

People have now started resorting to generic medicines instead of branded medicines due to the cost-efficiency and equal potency of medicine for the management of pain. Every person suffers at some point from pain but the type of pain may mild, moderate, or severe. Painkillers are suggested based on the medical conditions of the patients. The painkillers belonging to the above four categories are considered to be the best for fever, migraines, stomach aches, post-operative pains, injuries causing irritation and uneasiness, and inflammation.

Painkillers prove to be of great help at the time of suffering from pain and are suggested based on the need of the person. You may have the painkillers in your hand but many of you are often not sure if it is a narcotic painkiller or something else. The effects of every painkiller are different and understanding these painkillers is important for health. It is okay to buy analgesics over-the-counter but most effective painkillers are available only on prescription as they cannot be suggested to everyone. Like in the case of other medications, side effects cannot be avoided, the use of analgesics can bring certain short-term and long-term side effects. Remember that patients who are on medications for a long period may develop dependency followed by getting vulnerable to side effects.

How Do Painkillers Work?

At the time of injury, the body sends pain signals to the brain that eventually converts into pain sensations. Painkillers work by interfering with the pain messages transported by nerve endings and interference of the medicines can occur either in the brain or the injury area. The derivation of pain-relieving medicines is either from aspirin or opiates. Aspiring entails chemicals that since ancient times are adopted to relieve pain but opiates come from opium that is found in poppies.

Painkillers are either taken orally or by injection as is seen in the case of morphine that is used to manage moderate to extreme pain. Medicines used orally work well as it is followed as a course. Painkillers, simply speaking, target the areas of the brain and inhibit the production of pain from the injured area.

Types Of Painkillers

Patients with pain often use over-the-counter medicine but to combat the severe pain, a prescription for strong painkillers is necessary. These painkillers act as a narcotic that works by binding to the opioid receptors in the brain. After reducing the pain, it contributes to making your day pleasurable and improving your well-being. Doctors prescribe these painkillers based on the intensity of the pain. There are four major types of painkillers that patients are prescribed. They include

  • Non- Opioids
  • Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs
  • Opioids
  • Compound painkillers
